Your Semi-Truck Compressed Air System Questions, Answered

We get many questions about semi-truck compressed air systems. Here are some of the most common ones, with our answers:
1. What is a compressed air system on a semi-truck?
The compressed air system is like the lungs and muscles for several critical truck functions. An engine-driven air compressor builds up air pressure, which is stored in tanks. This compressed air is then used to power the air brake system, engage the parking brakes, operate the air suspension, and sometimes power accessories like air horns or air seats.
2. What causes air compressor failure?
Truck air compressor failure can happen for several reasons. Common causes include internal wear and tear from high mileage, contamination from moisture or oil blow-by (often due to a failing air dryer), restricted airflow from clogged filters, or issues with the governor causing it to cycle improperly.
3. What are the signs of a bad air compressor on a semi-truck?
Signs of a failing air compressor include the system being slow to build air pressure, the compressor cycling on and off too frequently or not shutting off at all (check your gauges!), noticeable oil consumption, or unusual noises like knocking or grinding coming from the compressor itself.
4.  How do you find leaks in a compressed air system?
Finding air leaks often involves listening for audible hissing sounds when the truck is parked and the system is pressurized. Technicians also use a soapy water solution sprayed onto lines, fittings, and components like brake chambers and valves – bubbles will indicate the leak source. For hard-to-find leaks, specialized ultrasonic leak detectors can be used.
5. What air system problems can you actually fix on the road?
Our mobile service is equipped to handle a wide range of common compressed air system failures roadside. This includes diagnosing and replacing air governors, air dryers, brake chambers, various control valves (dash valves, relay valves, quick release valves), repairing or replacing ruptured air lines, fixing gladhand issues, and addressing many low air pressure warning problems. We carry common parts to get you back up and running quickly.
